Civilization is descending into chaos: A deadly plague engineered by terrorists, international wars, and mankind's innate depravity are about to take the world to the brink.
Those are the last things Matt Anderssen, a scientist stationed at a Top Secret missile test site on a remote Pacific island, knew before all contact with the outside world suddenly stopped. Stranded on the idyllic tropical island that was his home and cut off from his wife and children by five thousand miles of ocean, Matt elicits the help of two loyal friends. Together, they defy the law and set out across the Pacific Ocean to reunite with their loved ones—if they're still alive, if anyone is still alive.
High seas, pirates, storms, and terrible luck will test them physically, and hopelessness, anger, and self-doubt will test them emotionally. But against all odds and with the help of a woman they rescue along the way, they will make it to the mainland—and what they find there will be their ultimate test.

About the Author
Tom Wright has been a professional meteorologist since 1995. He also runs a weather and science blog called TheWeatherGuru.com. Dead Reckoning is his first novel. Tom spent seven years forecasting weather for U.S. Department of Defense mission operations on Kwajalein, Marshall Islands and three years forecasting fire weather as an Incident Meteorologist (IMET) for the National Weather Service in Montana. He has briefed military generals, delivered live forecasts and discussions on large market radio stations, been interviewed on CBS and NBC national news programs, and was featured in a three-part series on wildfire on The Weather Channel. He has done a lot of research (some of which has been published) and he has spoken at national meteorological conferences. His career has taken him to such places as the Marshall Islands, the Grand Canyon, Glacier and Yellowstone Nations Parks, and Wake Island. In addition to spending a lot of his career in the Marshall Islands and Montana, he also spent two years forecasting weather out on the high plains of Kansas. In that short time he saw many supercells, two tornadoes, a blizzard, a record-breaking rainstorm, and countless other meteorological wonders. Many of these adventures have been detailed on his blog. Tom’s primary interests are, obviously, science and weather, but Tom also enjoys reading, sports (especially football), spending time with his family. He was born and raised on Vashon Island, WA and has been a die-hard Seattle Seahawks fan since the day they were born. He currently lives with his wife and teenage kids in southwest Oregon.

The apocalypse from the point of view of a weather geek
By Michelle Barnett
While I will admit to a little bias, as the author is a friend of mine, I would have loved this story, even if I didn't know him! Dead Reckoning is the tale of a husband and father trying to find his family in a post-apocalyptic world.
If you like novels with sailing, weather geekery, obscure locations in the middle of the ocean, discussions about god and morality, depths of depravity, heights of compassion, well-coordinated paramilitary operations, random laughs, and a good, extinction-level plague, then you should read this!
The story maintains a decent clip, while being informative about climate change and weather patterns. The pace and content keep the reader engrossed, until they are hit with a curve ball, at which point they are stunned out of the novel for a moment to consider how far people can stray from morality when they have no one to answer to, or the lengths people will go to for their family.
I'd tell you more, but I don't want to give anything away! Check it out, you won't regret it.

Excellent, Excellent Book
By LadyLJ57
Try the sample, I dare you! I tried it, with the thought that I probably wasn't going to like the book since I have zero interest in sailing and meteorology, but I am a fan of the pandemic and post-apocalyptic type books so I thought I would try it. By trying the sample I wouldn't have really invested anything but a little time if it was awful.
Boy, was I surprised! After reading the sample, which by the way was long enough for me to really get a "feel" for the book, I immediately purchased it and kept reading! I had to find out what happened!
The book is an excellent mix of science, human emotions, reflections, actions, great characterizations, and one of the best plots I have had a privilege to read in quite a long time. It even has a great ending!!!
I absolutely recommend this book. If this is a first try for this novelist, please keep writing! If not, what other titles can I find to enjoy?

Could have been good
By W. Klein
At times this was excellent. Very good premise, some good science, good characters.
Spoiler Alert
At other times the book wasn't even good. The author would take pages to describe mundane things and take paragraphs to describe important concepts. The main character feared an extended nuclear winter but just accepted his friends comment that it would only as a few years. Nobody explained why all the military bases around Seattle weren't nuked, while other bases throughout the country were. I can't imagine a scenario where the entire Seattle area isn't glowing after a nuclear exchange. He needs to leave out his thoughts on Atheism. Once would have been great. Twice - O.K. But for much of the book he just kept pounding away. I'm not much of a believer, but even I had enough. The ending was atrocious. One of the main supporting characters was very severely injured and we were left with - maybe he'll make it, maybe he won't. The main female character was just abandoned at the end. Did she choose to join the group in the valley or not? We'll never know. And that was dissatisfying. It was like the author thought to himself " Hey - I've spent enough time on this book. Let's just finish it already".
