This book is probably the most complete explanation of linear improvisation as applied to the guitar that I have come across. Randy Vincent goes into his subjects, which include a novel take on hexatonic applications, chromatic neighbor tones, and various scale forms and arpeggios, with unprecedented thoroughness. It is also refreshing to see the emphasis on thematic development, and I like how some of the great recorded guitar solos are often used as illustrative examples. One of the best methods for teaching and drilling bebop vocabulary.

I have Randy Vincent's two other books as well, Jazz Guitar Voicings vols 1 & 2, which cover drop-2 voicings and 3-note voicings and more, respectively. The first volume, for example, has become the entire, coherent framework of my chord knowledge, informing my skill in getting around the neck playing melodies with chords.
His Line Games has the same format as the other two books; lots of witty explanation, lots of real-world examples, and lots of exercises that get you going quickly, if you put in the work. It isn't just a book of jazz guitar snippets that you are supposed to cut out and paste into chord changes and solos. Instead it drills you in actual melodic vocabulary -not the boring Hanon stuff, thoroughly covering six (and more, actually) relevant sources of ideas for improvisation, which he connects very helpfully.
His writing style is simple, full of authority, and very direct, and the books all have material enough for each one alone to require years to master. Even still, he doesn't do all the work for you, but always invites you complete tasks he leaves unfinished with hints he supplies, and to explore other possibilities on your own that he merely mentions.
Before coming to these books I had a fair amount jazz language at my disposal and every day the fingerboard has been a little less of a cosmic mystery. Still I've made even more progress in the short time I've paying attention to Randy Vincent.

rich often beautiful material, but could be presented a little more clearly

I originally gave a very long-winded review that Mr. Vincent was kind enough to respond to but which I am no longer satisfied with. So this time I'll keep it shorter.
I struggle with this book each time I pick it up. The ideas are not difficult. I am already familiar with scales and modes. But I still struggle with the3-octave fingerings which Mr. Vincent introduces on page 15 in Example 1-75. There he gives a fingering for the basic sequential scale designed to repeat over each of 3 pairs of strings. It's simple enough to understand and practice when playing the scale sequentially, but when I try to follow the same fingering on Ex. 1-77 there are places where it requires shifting positions at the same time as shifting strings, something I have always tried to avoid due to it's awkwardness. I finally had to get out a pencil and write in the finger and string suggestions from 1-75 on to Ex. 1-76. It's still a twister for me, but beginning to make more sense. This technical part was my biggest obstacle because I suspect that mastering these 3-octave fingerings may be a key to this book and open up new possibilities in my playing.
I hope to be working with this book more often in the days and weeks to come.

This book is great

This book will change the way I play and I look forward everyday to working my way through it. It seems like Sher music keeps it real with their publications. You really learn something as opposed to them just putting stuff out to make money. The Hexatonics are practical and very effective for using to play thru changes. The system of hexatonic melodies is easy to understand and apply and sounds great. I'm just finishing the first chapter and I've learned a lot so far. This book will probably take a few years to work thru but it's well worth it so far.
