Healing in the Early Church: The Church's Ministry of Healing and Exorcism from the First to the Fifth Century (Studies in Christian Histor

This monograph presents the most comprehensive investigation yet made into the healing activity of the Early Church. In contrast to early skeptics like B. B. Warfield, the author is convinced there was a vigorous healing ministry in the centuries that followed the apostles, though it fluctuated somewhat and changed its mode. Exorcism is prominently attested throughout the period. The pre-Nicene Fathers recognized its great apologetic value as a dramatic demonstration of the superiority of Jesus Christ over pagan gods. Interest in healing miracles per se appears to have been particularly characteristic of the less educated members of the Church and those who were chaste in their devotion to the cause of Christ. Amongst these groups gifts of healing were found, becoming rare it seems by the mid-third century, but well attested again later in monastic circles. In the pre-Nicene period anointing with oil (in the name of Christ) was clearly an avenue of healing and, though mentioned comparatively rarely, may have been widespread as part of the regular ministry of local clergy to the sick. Baptismal healing, physical as well as spiritual, also took place. In the post-Nicene Church the shrines of the martyrs became a prominent locus of healing. Devotion to this cult may have been encouraged by Church Fathers as an acceptable alternative to magical practices. But evidence suggests syncretism did occur and martyr's relics could be invested with quasi-magical awe. Most Fathers were positive about the medical profession, seeing it as an avenue of God's work, and in the late fourth century one pioneered the hospital which then spread throughout the eastern Mediterranean. In an appendix to his work, the author sets down nine "pointers" from the healing activity of the Early Church, and his own experience, to assist those engaged in the healing ministry today.

Very solid scholarship, although a bit slanted
By Jamie B.
I had looked far and wide for a good, scholarly book on this topic (i.e., the persistence of miracles of healing beyond the apostolic age), and was happy to find this one. The author does not disappoint. His breadth and depth of scholarship is astounding, and he has convassed _all_ the relevant sources to catalogue, it seems, every single reference to Christian healing up through the fifth century. One gets a full and comprehensive sense of the scope and frequency of miraculous healings from this book, the contents of which often surprised me.

I docked the book one star for a simple reason, which has nothing to do with the book's scholarship or readability: there is a definite bias which skews the author's interpretation of the data. As you will find out on the back cover, the author runs his own healing ministry, which serves as the lens by which he reviews the data. In other words, he thinks of healing primarily in terms of a ministry to Christians, serving the primary purpose of the recuperation of health, as a part of a larger project of Christian ministry and counseling. This causes three problems, as I see it:

a. The author sees little value in the use of miraclulous healings as FORMS OF EVANGELISM, i.e. as means to 'get the attention' of non-believers and convince them of the truth of the Christian faith. In fact, once he reaches the third century he complains that this is the primary reasons for which Christians value healing. This is shocking to me, since it seems to be to be quite evident that this was the primary reason Jesus performed healings at all, i.e. as 'signs' testifying to His Messiahship. Yet the author brushes this off as reductive, presumably since it would undermine the value of his healing ministry [to fellow Christians].

b. The author sees healing as _the only_ legitimate Christian response to disease and suffering. When later authors like Cyprian suggest that we should patiently accept our sufferings and diseases from God as forms of discipline and mortification ('every father disciplines those he loves'), the author blames him for 'rationalizing' suffering, and this becomes a consistent refrain. Again, this surprises me, since the patient acceptance of sufferings seems to me to be a persistent Christian theme (cf. the book of Job). The reason, again, is that such an attitude would undermine the value of a healing ministry.

c. Lastly, the last chapters of the book deal with a period (the 4th century) when healing was associated less with miraculous healers and more with relics of saints. The author seems to tolerate this practice, although he critiques it as unhealthy, since dead saints cannot accompany the healing with a 'proclamation of faith' which a living healer could do. Again, this seems to come from the author's viewing history through the lens of his healing ministry, where healing is simply a subset of general ministry and counseling of Christian clients. In my view, I don't see this dichotomy at all. Since the saint is someone who, by definition, has lived a heroically Christian life, it would seem that healing by a saint would be the very best 'proclamation of faith' of all, since the person healed would be moved, presumably, to imitate the life of the saint.

These are some thoughts occasioned by the book. Otherwise, it is a fine book, and very good scholarship.

I thoroughly enjoyed this short face-paced historical tour by Daunton-Fear. I am doing doctoral research on the Spirit's presence throughout the first three centuries and this was an excellent work that provided not only great insight, but wonderful rabbit-trails to pursue.
