Laura Kinsale is the best, no question
By M. Lorrain
Laura Kinsale is the best, no question. There is nothing ordinary about her protagonists. Either in their abilities or their situations she manages to tell a story which resonates with her readers in spite of being outside the reader's ken. Folly and Robert meet through letters. A relationship develops in spite of his being in India in the military and she being the second wife of a much older husband in England. When Folly begins to realize she loves him, Robert tells her he is married and all communication ceases. But both lives go on, and there lies the tale.

A huge miss from a talented Romance writer
By Zena
It was really a wonderful start and I am one of those readers who love an in depth characterization in Romances as well as great writing. Kinsale always delivers on that front. However, in My Sweet Folly, a little more than quarter into the book, that in depth characterization that I love so much began to dissipate and turn into a plot based theme. I absolutely HATE that!
Had the author just kept pace with the romance and thickening the plot at the same time as she had done in her other superb romances, then I would not be complaining at all. But Kinsale never went back to developing the romance further. It just kept hanging on to the same pace that you had in the start, which completely frustrated you. The romance became a desultory second and Kinsale kept giving more attention to the suspense so much so that it lasted throughout the whole book! The romance came back literally at the end of the novel.
The stilted interactions between the hero and heroine, which gave heightened tension between them and aided the palpable emotions in the beginning, stopped making sense whatsoever as the story moved along. It became quite annoying how Follie kept seeing Robert in such a negative light over and over again without any change until more than half way through the book.
The story begins with the innocence of exchanging letters when Follie, the heroine was married to Robert's, the hero, cousin.; Robert was stationed in India and the forbidden romance between them starts to blossom in those lovely letters that last a good 6 years. Suddenly, Folly becomes a widow and the letters abruptly end on Robert's side--will not divulge more as not to have any spoiler. Folie tries to pick up her broken heart and to move on with her life in raising her step daughter. After 4 years pass with no word from Robert, she receives a letter from him informing her that he has come back to England and that he demands her presence, along with her step daughter, in his estate. Once she visits him, she meets the antithesis of the Robert of her letters. Something dark and sinister is troubling him and his social skills are passable at best. Robert is tortured and awkward and you never understand why until you realize he might be struggling with a mental disorder or something even more darker.
Like I said, all great formulas for a great romance, and the lovemaking/make-out scenes are to die for. But again, will never understand why Kinsale stopped developing the romance based upon the above mentioned scenarios and solely focused on the plot, which just killed any potential the book could have had. Even though the hero was disturbing, the tone of the book wasn't. Much of Kinsale's stories are dark but this was quite humorous. The humor, especially the repertoire between Folie and her step daughter, was quite hilarious. That and the great writing, was the only thing that kept me hanging on to finish the book.
A definite miss for me. I highly recommend Kinsale's Flowers from the Storm and the The Shadow Star. Especially Flowers from the Storm.

Laura Kinsale is the Best of the Best in romance genre books
By JD Binard
Laura Kinsale is the Best of the Best in romance genre books. Her books are intelligent, complex, historically accurate, and best of all, great reads! You will have seen none of her books' plots in other books. My Sweet Folly is not the best of her books. It is, nevertheless, a very good read with some lovely laugh-out-loud scenes.
Get acquainted with Laura. You'll be glad you did.
