Dumb. The only good news...it was free.

What isn't wrong with this book? Trite. Boring. Worst of all it is just dumb.
I can read the occasional fluff book. The fun chick lit. I hate, hate, hate when authors write dumb nonsense and try to slap it together and sell it as if it were a real book. This book is super short, really a long story.
**spoiler alerts***

The penthouse is the "largest and most expensive in the Washington DC area" and she is the assistant manager of the hotel.... and she is a law student at Georgetown. She is also socially inept, can't talk about sex, oh and virgin as well. she must have something going on to get an assistant manager job and the best hotel in DC. Right?

So, short story short, she gets manipulated into having "dinner" with the sheik. She finally puts her foot down by.... demanding to know if the sheik actually called the hotel chef and bartender to order the dinner himself or did he make his staff do it. Uh, this is the dinner he is forcing her to attend with him. What?

So on her "break" she goes to dinner....and has sex for first time. EVERYONE in hotel knows. They question her about the next day. She is annoyed by the questions and remarks that she is the youngest assistant manager at the hotel and "she wasn't going to sully her outstanding professional reputation by listening, or even acknowledging, the questions on the minds of every other staff member she passed."

Holy hell.

Talking about sleeping with a hotel guest 2 hours after meeting him, while on duty is sullying her reputation but actually having sex with said guest is not sullying her reputation?

Of course he pursues her. Guess what happens next to the virginal, naive law student/hotel manager. Guess.
Yes! She has lots of unprotected sex (cause she is too overwhelmed by her feelings to pay attention to protection) and gets pregnant.

How does she discover she is pregnant? Well while feeling sorry for herself (cause the sheik wanted to pay for law school and a new apartment and give her money like she is some kind of whore) she goes to her old nasty home (drunk mom bad childhood...blah, blah) she gets unexpectedly hungry so she walks two miles (yeah 2 miles) to a grocery store (while thinking about how stupid her plan was to go the old house) and buys... saltines and bologna. Weird. Right? She eats, walks and contemplates her SIX WEEK "relationship" with sheik. Throws up and nearly passes out and is saved by....guess...guess... Yes! The sheik.

So in Washington DC, in a poor neighborhood he saves her and then has a helicopter land. In some open field. In the middle of DC. Okay.

Then the author writes one the stupidest sentences I have ever read...

"When the helicopter landed in the open field, he carried Sabrina through the grass, unconcerned about possible snakes or other creatures. His main goal was to get her safe once again."

So he is not worried about dangerous snakes or other "creatures" (in DC?) he is only worried about her safety? Ummm. Did the author even read that sentence as she wrote it?

BTW.. she is "sleeping" from the time he saved her on the DC street, through the helicopter ride and of course aboard his private plane. Yup. 12 hours she slept... through all of that, not one moment of consciousness. Just sleep, sleep, sleep. Handy.

She wakes up in his country. Oh. no. She has a paper due the next day. Oh. no. An exam. Oh. no. A baby. What? Marry you? Be a princess and be fabulously wealthy? Live in an Arab country? (presumably with that sheik nonsense). Is it safe? Does she have to give up her citizenship? How do they treat women? Will she be the only wife? She considered her options...go back to school, work full time and be a single mom or stay here with the prince and have babies.

Of course. Babies and princess win.

Beyond stupid. I guess I can be thankful that the author did not 50 Shades it up.
Waste of time. Waste of money. Waste of reading. Waste of digital ink.
I want back my 20 minutes.

A distasteful beginning

I found the beginning of the story distasteful :
Sabrina, a law student, also works full time as an assistant manager in a luxury hotel. When the manager is unavailable, Sabrina meets a new guest, Samir, the head of state of some unnamed country. Samir falls in lust and demands that Sabrina have supper (and more) with him.

Sabrina does not want to go but is pushed by every hotel employee to attend Samir's wishes. I felt they were all pimping her. I also found in bad taste the reference from the concierge that he would be able to provide Samir with company for the night if it was required. Did we really came to the point that prostitutes are OK ? Not that they're in any way necessary as Sabrina then proceeds to bed Samir, whom she met all of three hours ago, losing her virginity in the process.

The middle part of the novella is fine. Sabrina gets her pluck back and Samir starts to transform into a reasonable human being. The ending, unfortunately, brings back all the arrogant aspects of Samir's character.

The story itself was good. The H and h were just alright. I was irritated by the fact that the h let all the hotel employees push her to compromise her own values and what she believed to be right. It felt a little disjointed after their night together, when she's back at the hotel. At no point did it explain she left in the middle of the night or anything. When she was upset that everyone "knew" what she had done, I thought it was because she was wearing the same clothes as she had the night before. It wasn't until she mentions going home to shower "again" that I realized she went home at all. And then up until Samir (the H, the Sheikh) mentions her leaving in the middle of the night, I didn't know that either. Especially since she mentions not eating the breakfast that was offered(?). I don't know, maybe I read that part wrong. The end I had a hard time understanding because of the h's actions concerning her schooling, but I guess maybe because of the situation she finds herself in, it is the only choice left to her.

I am one for recommending folks read a book and form their own opinions. For having been free, I can't complain that I wasted my money. And it wasn't THAT bad, so it wasn't really a waste of my time either. I just wish the characters had been more to my liking.

She favors a romance that isn't always easy on the eyes or heart and loves to see characters grow; characters that are seemingly doomed from the start but finds love anyway. 

Fear Me, her debut novel, is the first of many.

love jealous possessive alpha men but the hero went too far

This story reminded me of Bully as it has some similar elements, which I liked. Like with the hero in Jared in Bully, I liked that Keiran was jealous, possessive and protective of Lake, the heroine. Both men scared off any potential dates because they wanted the heroines for themselves and could not stand the idea of anyone else being with them. However, unlike Jared, I felt that Keiran went too far in his need to punish her, which greatly disturbed me. His anger was out of control and Lake, the heroine, was his whipping dog. Unlike Jared, Keiran physically punished Lake. He spanked her very hard and tried to physically force her to give him blowjs. He blackmailed her into sleeping with him, which felt like non-con to me. He kept talking about wanting to kill her as well as kill her family if she did not do everything that he wanted and she believed that he would do it. I thought what supposedly happened to him as a child was too off the wall, too unrealistic and unbelievable.

The heroine's behavior irritated me as well. I wanted her to grow a pair and grow a brain. She needed to tell someone what was going on during the bullying years and especial when coerced sex is added to the equation. She reminded me of the heroines in old skool historical romances. The heroine is getting raped but discovers that she likes it and changes her tune. Lake vacillated between wanting to have sex with Keiran and being afraid that he would hurt or kill her and her family members. I disliked the cliffhanger ending.

They 50 shaded my favorite book, Bully and named it Fear Me

I am going to segregate my review into two parts one that is meant for the author (the softer version) and then for everybody else (my real review)

Author save review

The basic plot has various holes in it and does not come out as strong as it is required to though. There are a lot that does not add up. Language needs attention as it gets choppy and requires to be smoothed a little more. The characters are all sharp but the one character that required attention, lacks it. The central character, Lake. i found her to be suffering from split personality disorder. The way she behaves at times is entirely opposite to the way she has been shaped. So there is no consistency in her character. Though in spite of everything, the way the second half emerged was interesting and the ending was pretty shocking

Now my goodness ends here so if the author is reading this review, then please stop at here and step away because the following is going to be ugly

My real review aka anger

First of all Bully by Penelope Douglas is one of my favorite books so naturally someone says that there is a book on the lines of Bully, i will naturally be on it instantly and that is how i ended up with Fear Me (Fear me ...my @#$ )

Fear me is a cheap copy of Bully (by penelope douglas). More like BDSM version of Bully or a thousand ways in which Bully could have gone wrong. There were a whole lot of people who found Bully really repulsive and offensive. They should then read this. i am wondering how all those pedantic and moral polices will uphold this book.

I can't believe at the audacity of this book.

Prepare for my wrath

Do you think forced sex is a joke? So you think rape is a joke?
I am amazed at the people who actually like this book. How can you enjoy reading and feeding people with rape fantasies? Are you out of your effing mind?

I never bother to judge the characters of a book or make them part of my review unless the core structure of character development is bad. Which is exactly i am out for blood this time.

The book crossed so many lines that there are no line anymore..

The entire first half of the book is pages after pages of the female character being raped and assaulted and it is not which is the worst part, the part that shows the girl enjoying it and the girl being a dumb pig not to even put up a fight or retaliate is what makes me furious and don't dare tell me that it is the way of this character (trust me to slap you if you say that to me ) No it is not the character!! it is the bad creation of a character and bad research into female psyche. I will be damned the day when a girl actually enjoys being forced.

Had some brain applied, you would have realized that even a 10 year old would have fought back much effectively and if at all you wanted to show the helplessness of the female character, then you should have shaped the plot better than focusing on the erotica and the sole reason being the beauty of the attacker.

Clearly this book is nothing but a erotica and somebody's sadistic and cruel fantasy.

Worst part is the female character is vicious to everyone else except where she actually needs to. This is one book where actually i was sympathetic to the popular girl types Our female character would outright insult her, rip her apart for pointing out the obvious. She would kick another attacker because he is not that cute but would let the other attacker get his way because he is apparently adonis walking the earth. (wow talk about hypocrisy)

I am sort of completion-ist which means i usually do not give up on a book without completing it and this book made me want to throw out and put my kindle on fire so many times but still i stood by it, till the end and must say, received a curve ball there

When i was drowning myself with a million reasons to hate this book, the author goes and creates a cliff hanger of epic proportions which in making me want to read the sequel in spite of my obvious hatred for this entire series.

The book has some serious - man and man-part- worship which is hurting my estrogeneous ego very badly

I hate this book for glamorizing rape and copying and executing my favourite book, Bully (by penelope douglas) in such a crude and cheap fashion. The basic plot itself is weak with so many shortfalls. There are no valid and cerebral explanations to very many things that is happening especially in the first half. while as much as i hate the book, i will admit that second half was better and then the author further flames my fury by adding a drastic cliffhanger.

Suspenseful, full of secrets and great twisted plot.

I wasn’t sure what I was getting into with this book, the synopsis indicated I was going to be in for an epic ride of bullying, torment and suspense. The author didn’t let me down but it took a while for me to get to the gasping, breath defying moment that had my brain so captivated that I lost all sense of reality. The characters grew to become clearer to the reader as the plot progressed but I will admit in the beginning I was losing my patience with Lake. It was clear from page one, she was a victim of the worst kind of bullying, the kind that doesn’t come with just words, but with threat of physical violence and mental manipulation. To make it even worse this began when they were just young children.

A devil had been let loose on the playground at the park and anyone in his reach was at risk of his torment and abuse. For the next ten years Lake is going to be Keiran’s puppet, she would try to hide but was always found by him or his faithful followers. Keiran will have control of the school, coaches and teachers. There is nowhere for Lake to go for help. With the disappearance of her parent’s years ago she lives with her single aunt and has one best friend. Those loved ones will soon become weapons that will be used against her in order for him to keep his dominance over the young Lake.

What was supposed to be the beginning of her freedom developed in the beginning of a new level or torment and mind control that no one could prepare themselves for. Lake was going to have to change the way she thought and distort what she thought she deserved if she was going to survive Keiran. It had now become a battle of finding out what went on in his is past that made him into the monster he was today and use that to her advantage so she could gain the upper hand.

This story is full of suspense, drama and secrets. I was frustrated with Lake in the beginning for being such a victim, not finding her escape but by the time I had finished the first book, I could see how the plot was playing out in the mind of the author. She needed Lake to be that weak so we could see that moment when Keiran had taken the last shred of innocence from her and begin turning her into the strong determined woman she never knew she could be. I loved how Lake was very aware of the evil that brewed in Keiran and made sure that evil never invaded her soul to make her into the monster he was, yet she could see the broken little boy that had been tormented until he became the demonic devil he was today.

Keiran is written to be the ultimate mystery. It wasn’t till the end of the book that we learned what is fueling his evilness, he doesn’t want to be loved, and he doesn’t want anyone caring about him. I was telling friend about this book this morning and all I could do was express the awe I found in the ability of the author to create a character such as Keiran and yet develop him in a way that no matter what he does, the reader can still connect to him. As she let us know what he had endured in life, she also gave the reader permission to care about this villain on a level that even confused me. The ending of this book is a cliffhanger yet it yields to the idea that we are going to be focusing on yet another part of the plot that was left unanswered in the first book, her parents. I highly recommend this book and would even say those who like to dabble in the dark and twisted without being left with haunting images and nightmares would enjoy this series.

Be sure to browse before you buy

You may find this to your liking, but I wish I hadn't wasted my money. I tried for a couple of hours to get into this, but I simply could not read it.

Not that it's hard to understand. Quite the contrary. But I found it precious, affected, and silly. Not to mention self-indulgent. Other than that, though . . .

Sartwell defines beauty as "the object of longing." He tells us he is "less concerned to defend that as a definition than to use it as a basis for trying to find something common to certain kinds of human experiences and relations to things." Since we long for many things that are not beautiful, and commonalities between experiences and objects of longing may therefore have little to do with beauty, I find this approach less than promising.

And indeed, Sartwell stretches the idea of beauty beyond any normal meaning, and he makes it useless as a category of discernment. For instance, Picasso's Guernica is not-and is not supposed to be-beautiful. It's a horror, and in its horror lies its grandeur-it's supposed to horrify us. To call it beautiful because it illustrates the satisfaction of the longing for power is to corrupt the term "beauty" and miss the point of the artwork.

As for the self-indulgence, Sartwell has merely collected snippets of his reflections. He says this is "a book of moments, and can be dipped into rather than read straight through, though I also hope that the accumulation of moments displays a kind of structure that could yield a coherent set of experiences." Well, if you invite someone to dip into your moments, you'd better be a genius, if they are to find such visits worthwhile. Sartwell isn't. One wonders whether he didn't bother to use his many moments to generate a coherent set of thoughts because that task was beyond him, or because he just couldn't be bothered. Either way, Sartwell's belief that his fragments of reflection are worth our while betrays a self-confidence that the twenty-five pages or so I pondered do not justify.

And frankly, you have to puzzle over the perceptiveness of anyone anyone who refers to "the beauty of Jennifer Lopez" as "the skinniest common denominator of nubile beauty."

A Worthy Little Book

Lovely and enjoyable and illuminating book, with chapters on six different names and conceptions of beauty.

However, to experience its merits you must clear away some obstacles. This is not a scholarly book, so do not expect it to be one or you will see only its faults. It is not even a collection of essays. The book is written in a very personal voice, and it is more conversational than anything else, with the stance and tone changing the way it might in a conversation. Sartwell also writes in a more unrestrained way than most, and although the two are quite different in other respects, in this he reminds me of the critic David Hickey.

The rewards of this book are not meager. Sartwell talks us through Greek, Hebrew, Sanskrit, Japanese, Navajo, and English names for beauty. His running commentary is full of surprising connections and juxtapositions, often taken from his own life. Although he differentiates the different approaches to beauty, his own mind is strongly synthetic, and there is an underlying conviction, supported in his examples, that these different beauties are all active in our experience in some way. This is one significant difference between contemporary scholarship, in which magnifying differences is a primary (and sometimes sole) merit, and Sartwell's writing, which differentiates in order to magnify relatively neglected and diminutive dimensions of (at least potentially) common experience.

The upshot was that Sartwell actually helped me to differentiate some aspects of beauty that I had conflated--and to enjoy them more.

Impressive in so many ways: a clear focus that is simple yet profound and important. What a clear entry into a lively, elegant and learned discourse: six words in six languages and cultures for beauty. And what a delightful ride on a high-wire intellectural strand in Crispin Sartwell's facile and eclectic mind...it is a delight to share in his vast learning...and to be spoken to in crisp, contemporary language. The meaning of beauty is in our reaction to it, and the opportunity to share in Sartwell's reactions is an aesthetic holiday.

Highly Recommended!

This is a great book so far. It's not as thorough as Programming in Go: Creating Applications for the 21st Century, but the author does an excellent job of keeping it simple, concise, and dropping in gotcha's every now and then. All the basics of Go are explained in the first couple of chapters, which was nice for a newcomer to the language like myself.

Like Go Programming Blueprints, which is another great Go book, the examples provided do a good job of providing applications you can really use, with explanations to walk you through it.

One strange observation: there is no index at the end for reference... Would have been nice!

Very Good Book

I've looked at a lot of books on Golang; pretty much everything that's out there. Golang is a newer language and there isn't a great, industry changing, Tony Gaddis type book yet for golang. Out of all of the books that are out there, however, this one has been one of my favorites so far. Yes, some of the code doesn't work, but that's cutting edge coding - hopefully Mal Curtis can provide a website with some updates. I haven't looked into that, yet, to see if that exists. Other learning resources for golang which I have also liked: Caleb Doxsey's book, and the website "go by example" is also very good. Another great learning resource for building web apps with golang are the youtube videos at "Todd McLeod" 's account. Check them out and good luck learning golang.

Great intro to Go

An excellent introduction to Go, taking you(me!) from nothing to a solid understanding of how things are constructed in Go. Mal covers the building of a complete web-app, which is cool, but thankfully covers building a real web-app, complete with authentication, database access, and concurrency. All of these things are needed in real world apps (as well as most things you'd build with Go), and its great that this book covers them all.

Its an easy to read introduction to Go for the world of web apps.

Downsides? Not many. Code samples are a bit poorly formatted in Kindle, some might find the Go coverage a bit basic (some more coverage of the stdlibs might have been nice?) and its definitely a learn-by-doing rather than a reference book.

Summary: Great intro to web apps with Go.

This book was required for a folklore literature class. It had some valuable information in it, but the book was really expensive, which was a real shame. Anyhow, the book was used for class.

About the Author

Maha Gargash, an Emirati born in Dubai to a prominent business family, has studied in Washington, D.C., and London. With her degree in radio/television, she joined Dubai Television to pursue her interest in documentaries. Through directing her television programs, which deal mainly with traditional Arab societies, she became involved in research and scriptwriting. Her first novel, The Sand Fish, was an international bestseller.

Full of raw insight into the realities of Emirates and ...

Full of raw insight into the realities of Emirates and Egyptians, this book presents the complexities of its characters with strength and emotion. Told in third person, it gives insight to the segregated genders of Emirates and the quick journey from traditions to riches. It makes you angry at one Emirate who uses power to tilt his world, and then makes you applaud his secret daughter who boldly steps onto the stage for all to see and hear. Each time I opened this book, I embarked upon an exciting roller coaster that I wanted to ride again and again. Well done!

An interesting premise; uneven narration

I was intrigued by the basic plot of this novel, two young women in the same wealthy UAE family rebelling. However, the inconsistent narration, especially at the start, nearly caused me to give up on the book. I'm glad I finished it, but more because I hate to leave a reading incomplete.

Arab family drama

Majed is the head of an Emirati family. He’s quite an unlikeable, angry fellow, full of himself and his power over others. Dalal is the daughter of his second secret marriage and has been abandoned by her father. Her dream is to become a famous singer, which is completely against her father’s wishes. Even though her father has abandoned her, he holds control over her as he attempts to stop what he feels will bring shame and embarrassment to the family. Mariam is Majed’s niece, the daughter of Majed’s dead brother. Majed sends Mariam to dental school, mostly due to guilt because of his cheating his brother out of his business. Both of these young women are greatly restricted in their efforts to lead their own lives by Majed and the Emirati society.

Mariam lives at a university in Cairo, while Dalal lives in the poor section of Cairo so you get a look at the two types of worlds. While it’s obvious why Majed would be an unlikeable character, I couldn’t like Dalal either. She seemed so immature and only cares about becoming a star. I found Dalal and her mother to be quite annoying. Mariam is much easier to like as she struggles to become a dentist, feeling that was the only way she could escape her rigid family and the Emirati society.

This book has been compared to “The Kite Runner” but I didn’t think it had any of the emotional pull of “The Kite Runner”. It was basically a family drama made a bit different by its setting in an Arab culture.

At the first pages there was something I didn't get.
She saw him when she was 18 and now 8 years later, when she is 22 (huh?) they come to collect her for the alphas.

But next to that it is a nice erotic read.

And again two stories in it. Like the second one as good as the first one.
Her books are built up the same, but I don't care, I like them any way.

Loved the book, she flees a unfaithful lover and ends up in a unsafe injured situation saved by brothers who show her compassion and make sure she knows she is safe and everything they will do is with her consent , and that they will make it good for her. Of course she want this with these hunky brothers, and it beyond anything she ever imagines

This would be a really good story if it had been in more depth. I felt like I read a chapter to get to know the main female character and then she met the shifter men that were going to be her mates, then bam, sex. I am not saying it was written bad, because it wasn't but I have never liked a story where you know nothing about the characters except how many times they have sex. I wanted more and was disappointed. Sorry.
