From Library Journal
Poet Zhang Yonglin is sentenced to a labor camp he ironically describes as a haven amidst the hysteria of the Chinese Cultural Revolution. After he marries a woman he had seen eight years earlier, the story becomes, on one level, an analogy between his temporary sexual impotence and the postion of intellectuals. A year later he is ready to abandon his wife and escape from the camp. Cameo appearances by philosophic and literary figuresMarx and Meng-tz, Othello and Song Jiandiscussing China and sex allow the incorporation of non-novelistic elements while indulging in gallows humor. The references to Western culture and the translator's historical notes should make this complex and fascinating book easily accessible. Ethan Bumas, Fudan Univ., Shanghai

A traumatic confession
By Luc REYNAERT
This more or less autobiographical novel excels by its emotional depth.
It shows us the 'human' side of re-education camps and state firms.
The main character is an intellectual democrat, who sees and knows that the Chinese common man has been terrorized, deceived and used as guinea pigs by the powerful. They were / are the (dead or alive) victims of the power struggle at the top of the Communist Party with all its expulsions and rehabilitations. As the author states coldly: 'The Cultural Revolution established a new world record of criminals'.
When the inmates of the camps hear about another round of liquidations, they are happy that they already know their own punishment (at that moment, their work camp is a paradise).
This book is also an impressive tale about the battle of the sexes with candid treatment of sexual and marital problems.
The author is a master in the description of emotional scenes, sometimes as a violent participant and at times as a cold observer. But he always finds the passionate human touch.
The dream scenes are equally impressive, while the use of humanized animals is highly original.
This novel is not less than a masterpiece. Not to be missed.

Out of print! For shame . . .
By MydaRay
And only one review of this gem!? I 'discovered' this novel about twenty years ago and re-read it every four or five years. I would compare it with Solzhenitsyn's Cancer Ward in quality and to some degree the stories are similar, each sharing a hero who has suffered for his integrity in a 'camp' and is incapable of achieving relationship with a woman. But as the reviewer above suggests, this is not the Soviet Gulag but rather hard labor with 'Chinese characteristics'. Ninety cents plus postage, get it.

Alchemical Active Imagination: Revised Edition (C. G. Jung Foundation Books), by Marie-Louise von Franz

Although alchemy is popularly regarded as the science that sought to transmute base physical matter, many of the medieval alchemists were more interested in developing a discipline that would lead to the psychological and spiritual transformation of the individual. C. G. Jung discovered in his study of alchemical texts a symbolic and imaginal language that expressed many of his own insights into psychological processes. In this book, Marie-Louise von Franz examines a text by the sixteenth-century alchemist and physician Gerhard Dorn in order to show the relationship of alchemy to the concepts and techniques of analytical psychology. In particular, she shows that the alchemists practiced a kind of meditation similar to Jung's technique of active imagination, which enables one to dialogue with the unconscious archetypal elements in the psyche. Originally delivered as a series of lectures at the C. G. Jung Institute in Zurich, the book opens therapeutic insights into the relations among spirit, soul, and body in the practice of active imagination.

Where are you tonight, Sweet Marie?
By kathryn b
This was the first serious modern work on alchemy that I've read, and boy did I luck out! It is a work charged with authenticity and vision. von Franz gives you some historical background on the origins of alchemy, then introduces this 16th century alchemist, Gerhard Dorn, and his inner and outer struggle to illuminate and heal the schism between spiritual alchemy and Western Christianity. Dorn doesn't come to any happy conclusions, but the chapter on Medieval Magic is worth the entire read. It includes a serious attempt to examine the question of evil (oh thank you!)and the historical process of projecting the contents of the psyche onto some aspect of the body. Also an inspiring section on the "cloud" as symbol in alchemy and christian mysticism for the confusing and darkening part of a person's journey inward to her own core. Also, peppered throughout are juicy tidbits about things like necromancy, pyromancy, hydromancy and something Jung himself was into for a while called Geomancy--which she explains in a brief but fascinating aside. The book is developed from transcripts of a 1969 lecture she gave in Zurich at the Jung Institute. It reads like a lecture, with the rythmns and addendums of the spoken word mostly intact, but obviously translated. That's ok--it flows like pure gold and is a great window into this whole Zurich scene and the living body of work that von Franz and Jung together embodied. This little work is bound to inspire and fuel some aspect of your own imagination. Enjoy!

Brilliant commentary with tons of psychological insights
By Neal J. Pollock
Derived from Jan/Feb 1969 lectures @ C. G. Jung Institute in Zurich, this commentary on Gerhard Dorn's 17th c. work complements Jung's "Mysterium Coniunctionis" & "Psychology & Alchemy." It's an advanced book--prior background in Jungian psychology & alchemy are helpful, but p. 21: "One book opens another. Read many books & compare them throughout & then you get the meaning," & this work helps one understand Jung's lengthier/more difficult works. Indeed, despite the erudite material, von Franz clarifies the meaning in her awesome commentary. Per her title, pp. 22-3: "Jung sometimes defined the introverted psychological tradition in alchemy as the art of active imagination with material." Further, p. 147: "Dorn floated over the abysses of the mysteries that Jung was to penetrate." [later]

Much of Dorn's work is a symbolic, alchemical journey similar to the Kabbalistic Hekalot, the Divine Comedy, the Egyptian Book of the Dead, or especially Ashcroft-Nowicki's "The Shining Path." His travelers (spiritus, anima & body) resemble the Neshamah, Ruach, & Nefesh in Kabbalah. Dorn reveals brilliant insights into psychology but fails in his attempt to reconcile Christian dogma with alchemy. pp. 12-13: "The ultimate dynamic impulse to become a physicist is based upon the desire to find out more about how God works...The really great & creative scientists have the same motivation as the alchemists: to find out more about that spiritual or divine substance...which lies behind all existence."

But, von Franz's also provides enlightening/profound/pithy asides on: dreams, flow ("a constant awareness of the Self"), evil & the shadow, animal & human rituals/games, the Unconscious creating conflict to achieve progress (implying the spiral development model), the psychological basis for divination techniques, & the relationship between individuation & synchronicity. pp. 148-9: "While we normally live in a dual world of `outer' & `inner' events, in a synchronistic event this duality no longer exists; outer events behave as if they were a part of our psyche, so that everything is contained in the same wholeness...To reach that point where outer & inner reality become one is the goal of individuation. Through it one also reaches some of what Jung calls the `absolute knowledge' in the unconscious...At the end point of development (the end stage of the individuation process) the Zen masters are in such a state of harmony with the collective unconscious that they communicate with one another subliminally, they are together in the unus mundus". [Self] This is a brilliant work, my favorite of the 5 I've read.

a wonderful disquisition on alchemy and Jung...
By Craig Chalquist, PhD, author of TERRAPSYCHOLOGY and DEEP CALIFORNIA
....from his finest student. The depth of her self-exploration-informed research shines from every page. If you can't understand why alchemy has so much to tell us about the dynamics of the unconscious and of individuation, buy this book, it's quite wonderful.

Holistic Legal Studies
By A Customer
I first read this book as a freshman at the University of Massachusetts over a decade ago. I still have it on my bookshelf. What the writers have done, all proffesors at UMass, is to aggregate numerous sources of content some legal, some on the fringes which are made to be legal oriented in context, to offer an anti clinical and humanisitic approach to the study of law. The focus is to offer the reader/student a different perspective on law and its impact and effect on society. I would imagine that reading the text alone may be a less than gratifying experience, but coupled with intellectual discussion it can be a tremendously powerful tool. The text is required reading for all UMass Legal Studies majors, and offers a wonderful foundation for moving forward within the study of law with a unique point of view.

Excellent but marred
By Prof. R. Paris
This is no doubt an excellent collection. Obviously, a lot of thought has gone into the selecting of the numerous reading. I've used it as companion to my course on sociology of law. It proved, however, a little too complex for undergraduates. I still believe it would be very useful for graduate courses, in particular the notes and questions accompanying the readings. My main objection is the clearly leftist (or anarchical ?) bias the reader rather rapidly detects. I am not questioning the right of the editors to promote their point of view. But I believe their sympathies should have been stated to start with. Textbooks need not be neutral; their leanings, however, should not be hidden behind pretended scientific or academic objectivity. It is somewhat annoying to have to warn students. The above does not mean that I will never assign the book again. But it is my considered opinion that the higher level of critical ability of graduate students is more appropriate to confront the propaganda aspect of this text.

An Overview of Different Aspects of Law
By N. Seeber
I like this book so far, and I'm reading it as a companion to my (undergrad) internship at a law firm. It has a broad overview of several areas of the law, but some chapters seem overly specific for a general survey. It has case summaries, interviews, excerpts from other books and essays written in the area, and commentary. It also addresses intersections of the field in sections like like "Law and Power." I would recommend it, but it's definitely a textbook and written that way.

So Much More Than a Retelling of Peter Pan!
By Stephanie Ward
'Neverland' is a sweet modern day retelling of Peter Pan. It follows our main character - Livy - as she attempts to come to terms with her little sister's death. Even though it's been months, Livy can't move on with her life and spends her free time at the Seattle Children's Hospital, visiting and reading to the patients - which helps keep her memories of her sister alive. Enter the cute and mysterious Meyer - who intrigues Livy and promises her a life of adventure and good times. Livy isn't sure if she's ready to let go of her sister yet, but Meyer's world is seductive itself - and Livy finds herself having to choose between the fantasy of Neverland and the real world; where she just might be able to find the strength to live and love again.

I've been really loving the trend of fairy tale retellings that's been happening lately, and this book only adds to it. It's a modern day retelling of Peter Pan, which I thought might be a bit weird and would turn into some kind of fantasy. The author wove a magical story that was able to combine this well-known tale with a contemporary setting - which made it not only feel realistic, but possible as well. Our main character, Livy, is incredibly easy to identify with right from the very beginning of the book. The author uses first person point of view - from Livy's perspective - to tell the story. If you've read any of my other reviews, you know that this is by far my favorite writing style. It worked perfectly with this book because we get to experience everything that happens alongside Livy, as well as getting to know her character on an incredibly personal level. We get to be inside of her head during the whole book, so we hear her inner dialogue along with more personal thoughts and feelings - her fears, hopes, dreams, the intense pain and grief of losing her little sister, and the exciting feelings that Meyer brings out in her. By the end of the book, I felt like I truly knew Livy - it's like she was a real person instead of just a character in a story. The flow and pace of the story was smooth and natural - it felt like Livy was telling me what happened in a conversation.

The story line is a true roller coaster of emotions - one that I fully experienced, which is unusual for me. I felt Livy's emotions - both good and bad - as if they were my own, and had visceral reactions during the entire book. I smiled, laughed, swooned, cried, and just about everything in between. When I react this way to a book, I know that I've found an author with true talent - which is precisely what happened with this novel. I loved Meyer's character and the way he was with Livy. He had so many different sides to his personality that it felt like I knew him just as well as Livy did. I can be a real sucker for romance, and I have to admit that this book brought that out in me. I loved watching Livy and Meyer as they see each other from afar then finally meet, and then as their relationship grows and blossoms during the rest of the story. But it's not just the romance between Livy and Meyer that makes this novel so fantastic. It's literally everything about it - from the writing style and the rounded characters to the setting and the flow of various emotions it evokes - and everythng in between. To me, it wasn't just a modern day retelling of Peter Pan - it was so much more than that. It deals with some very difficult topics - like grief, the death of a loved one, cancer in kids, and feeling invisible. It's not just about the hard things in life though - it also speaks of finding yourself, letting yourself be happy, falling in love, and accepting the things we can't control in life - to name a few. To me, this book was the perfect blend of romance as well as showing the full spectrum of human emotion and the ability to heal. It's so hard to try to describe what this novel became to me - probably because it's so much more than just a contemporary romance or a fairy tale retelling. It was beautifully written with a compelling story line, realistic characters, and a story full of hope, acceptance, and love. That's the closest I can come to describing how this book made me feel - aside from the huge emotional roller coaster of the story itself - and what I love about it. I can't recommend this book highly enough to fans of contemporary fiction as well as readers who enjoy fairy tales, retellings, romance, and books that deal with serious life topics. You don't want to miss out on this book!!

Neverland certainly has something magical to it.
By Total Book Geek
3.5 stars

Peter and Wendy by J.M. Barrie is one of my all time favorite books, and I do mean the original story, not so much the Disney version. When someone takes this precious story, to create their own tale of wonder, I admit I’m always a bit hesitant. But I liked what Shari Arnold has done with it, for the most part.

Neverland starts off pretty dark and sad. Livy lost her younger sister to cancer a couple of months ago, and she’s still very much grieving over that loss. She’s in some unbelief that she will never see Jenna again. To feel closer to her sister, she reads bed time stories in the children’s ward at the hospital. It’s really bad though for Livy, she’s drowning in her grief and at the moment sees no way out of it.

That slowly changes when she meets Meyer. A mysterious boy who takes her on adventures, and for a couple of moments Livy gets to live again. We of course figure out pretty quickly who this boy is, but everything about him stays in a cloud of mystery.

So far the first part of the story. It’s not easy to read about loss and grief, but Shari Arnold has written about it beautifully. You get to read about it, without being overwhelmed. Sometimes it might seem repetitive, but I feel that it works here because of the theme. Everyone deals with losing someone in their own way.

Livy’s moments with Meyer were mostly fun, though you do get the feeling more is going on. And when a certain James enters the scene, you definitely know nothing is what it seems.

The second part was a bit too out there for me, when it becomes more fantasy. On its own I liked the idea the author thought out, and the way she used Neverland for Livy to give her loss a place. Then the third part was good again, how she tied it all up with a nice little bow.

To me it was mostly a story about moving on, letting go of that sadness and have the hope to start living again. Meyer and James help Livy achieve that, even if she doesn’t always want it, because if she lets go, she might not remember either. In reality this is of course not the case, but through this adventure Livy learns. Neverland certainly has something magical to it. The theme of death and loss is pretty heavy, but at times it even seems whimsical.

A magical read!
By Heena Rathore P.
Plot/Story:
Neverland is a fairytale retelling of Peterpan and as far as I’m concerned this is the best book I’ve read so far in the fantasy genre. It has a dreamlike imagery which will leave you craving and begging for more.
The pace of the story was perfect, not too fast, not too slow. I was able to not only read the story in front of me but was also able to live it forgetting everything around me.
This book is literally unputdownable and I love it so much that it has made its place at the top of my all-time favorites! I’ve already read it twice now and I’ll be re-reading it again soon.

Characters:
I absolutely adore the lead characters of Livy and Meyer, so much so that I guess I’m in love with Meyer! The relationship between Livy and Meyer developed slowly and beautifully. The vulnerability of Livy added more depth to each and every aspect of the story.
I wanted to cry when Livy felt hurt and wanted to do a happy dance whenever she got a positive response from Meyer. I even blushed a dozen times while reading about Livy and Meyer’s small interactions.

Romance:
The beautiful budding romance between Livy and Meyer was nothing less than magical. It was slow and cute love that started as an odd friendship but developed into something more special. The thing that made their relationship so magical is the subtlety of feelings beautifully expressed by the author.

Writing:
Shari Arnold’s writing style is so simple that it flows smoothly throughout the book. I enjoyed reading this book mainly because of the uncomplicated writing style. I didn’t just read this book, but I was really able to live it (and that’s something.)

Beginning:
The book started beautifully with Livy reading Peter Pan for children in a hospital. How can anyone not get emotionally involved right from the start with this kind of a start! I was swept right off my feet from the very first page. And as the story progressed I lost myself completely in the beautiful world of Livy and Meyer.

Ending:
Ahh… the ending. At first, I was a little shocked. But then after a few minutes, I thought about it and realized that it was for the best and that the ending couldn’t have been better. Yes, it wasn’t a straight out happy one, but it was realistic and, more importantly, acceptable. After being swept off by this story I really dreaded to know the end, but the author, Shari Arnold, really surprised me with a well-balanced ending.

Cover Art:
The cover art of this book is simply awesome. The colors are so pretty and subtle and the minimalistic design makes it a great cover.

Blurb:
The blurb is perfect and gives a fair idea of what to expect from the book. I picked it up from NetGalley after reading the blurb itself, so yeah, it totally worked for me, and I’m sure it’ll definitely get anyone else’s attention as well!

The Humanists versus the Reactionary Avant Garde: Clashing Visions for Today's Architecture, by Charles Siegel

The early twentieth century believed that technology would bring a better world. Modernist architects were part of a larger social movement with a vision of a more prosperous high-tech future.

Today, we see that we must make selective use of technology, using technologies that are beneficial and controlling those that are destructive. Beginning in the 1970s, postmodern architects were part of a larger social movement to use technology for human purposes.

But today’s avant gardists have rejected this humanist impulse and regressed to the modernist love of technology for its own sake, even if their designs are cold and sterile—and even if their designs are so antihuman that they make people feel sick.

The avant gardists are conservatives, celebrating the status quo of our technological economy. Neotraditional architects are the real progressives, trying to humanize our economy.

With its new view of the history of architecture, its hilarious examples of antihuman avant gardist designs, and its inspiring examples of designs that learn from traditional models, this book will convince you that the emperors of today’s architecture have no clothes.

"Among the ... books on this topic that I have read, yours is by far the most sophisticated and the most up to date."
--Andres Duany, principal of DPZ Partners

"Siegel makes a clear and intelligent case, based not on romantic nostalgia but on the pressing issues of contemporary society. I recommend this book in the strongest possible terms."
--Prof. Nikos Salingaros, author of A Theory of Architecture

Review
In The Humanists Versus the Reactionary Avant Garde, Charles Siegel illuminates the question of what progressive, contemporary architecture truly means.
The Humanists Versus the Reactionary Avant Garde was sitting on a shelf in my office, awaiting review, for several weeks. I was busy, and in a chance conversation I told CNU co-founder Andres Duany that I didn't know when I would find time to read it. "You have time for this book," Duany assured me.
... author Charles Siegel clarifies the confusing world of modernism and post-modernism and connects them to New Urbanism in new ways--and he does this is a compact 162 pages. ... Whether you care about style or just want to make good places for people, the book offers useful insights--and not just about architecture.
... The Humanists confronts a vital issue: How can architecture and design address the human needs of our time? In doing so Siegel has written a gem of a book....

An indispensable primer on today's architecture: how we got here and where we should be headed
By Julie Rosenzweig
Siegel gives a concise and engaging overview of last century’s transition from people-oriented, traditional architecture to technology-focused, modernist architecture. He relates how the dehumanized sterility of modernism ultimately gave way to two contrasting forms of postmodern architecture: a neotraditionalism that is often insincere, and a discordant or flamboyant avant-gardism that takes nothing seriously.

Having pointed out that modernist architecture was part of a larger cultural project aimed at “spreading blind faith in technology and progress,” he argues that we should once again make architecture “part of the larger cultural conversation,” only this time with different ideals in mind, such as simplicity, human scale, historic continuity and the subordination of modern technology and the modern economy to human needs.

The cultural reconstruction project that Siegel advocates is something with which many will surely identify.

Siegel points out that today's New Urbanists tend to ignore architecture and focus solely on urban design. His argument that such a focus is insufficient is persuasive and should be heeded.
